Here is how to account for every cut.Every stick of steel that comes through the door ends up in one of three states: it is stock, it becomes an offcut, or it becomes a drop. Most shops track the first one, eyeball the second, and sweep up the third. That gap is where money leaks. Three words, three different things Stock is full length material as purchased. A 40 foot stick of W12x26, a sheet of half inch plate. It has a known grade, a known heat, and a known cost, because you have the mill cert and the invoice. Offcuts are reusable remnants. You cut a 28 foot beam from a 40 foot stick and a 12 foot piece goes back on the rack. That piece is not scrap. It is inventory that already cleared receiving, already has a cert trail, and already cost you money. The next time a job needs an 11 foot piece of that section, the offcut is free material, if anyone knows it exists. Drops are the short ends and skeleton that are genuinely done: too short to use, headed for the scrap bin. Drops still matter to the ledger, because they are the difference between what you bought and what shipped. If your drop rate creeps from 4 percent to 9 percent, you want to see it in numbers, not discover it in the scrap dumpster invoice. The mistake is treating offcuts like drops. An offcut thrown in the scrap bin is bought steel sold back at scrap price. An offcut left on the rack with no record is nearly as bad: the buyer orders a fresh stick because the system says there is nothing in that section under 20 feet. Why provenance is the part that pays Knowing you have a 12 foot offcut is good. Knowing which stick it came from is better, and that second piece of information is what most paper systems lose first. Cut provenance means every piece of steel can answer two questions: what stock did I come from, and what did I leave behind. That chain earns its keep in several ways. Cert traceability. When an inspector asks for the mill cert on a shipped member, you trace the part back through its cuts to the source stick and its heat number. Without provenance, that is an afternoon of guessing. Real nesting decisions. When the saw operator can see that a job's 9 foot parts can come out of existing offcuts, the fresh sticks stay whole for the long members. Good nesting from full sticks is table stakes; good nesting that consumes the remnant rack is where the yield improves. Honest job costing. If a job consumed three offcuts left over from a previous project, the material cost of both jobs is different than the purchase orders suggest. Provenance lets you charge steel to the job that actually used it. Finding the leak. If one section size keeps producing 6 foot drops, that is a purchasing pattern worth changing. None of this requires anyone to do bookkeeping at the saw. Recording the cut is the bookkeeping. The habit that makes it work Software or not, the discipline is the same: an offcut that is not recorded does not exist. If your shop only adopts one rule, make it this one. Every remnant that goes back on the rack gets an identity at the moment it is created, while the operator still knows exactly which stick it came from.
